SHR # 2356 :: The BluePrint Power Hour
Show Notes:
[3:29] Why is Rob not a fan of AST Research?
- In the early 90’s their products actually worked.
- The company actually accused Rob of working for EAS.
- Carl had a similar experience with the company.
- AS to T is now on the cutting edge with DGC, a.k.a. Sugar (sarcasm)
[12:00] How do you stay motivated?
- Rob needs to train to feel his best.
- Do not view supplements or AAS as shortcuts.
- Hiring a personal trainer will accelerate your results faster than any supplement.
- Asking for help is not a sign of weakness. It is smart to do so.
- Improving sleep will improve your mood and up your motivation to train.
- Warming up properly will get you motivated to finish the training session.
[18:23] Mega-dosing supplements?
- Usually results in wasted supplements… at best.
- Mega-dosing beta alanine displaces taurine levels and can develop an arrhythmia.
- Taking too many stimulants can land you in the ER.
- Always assess your tolerance with a half dose.
- Check your blood pressure before and after taking a pre workout to see how they affect your levels.
- There are a few free form aminos that you can get away with mega dosing.
[34”50] Why don’t you like HMB?
- Rob has experienced no real world benefit from it.
- Meta studies show little benefit.
- It has been way overhyped in the past (“Feels like Deca!)
- It was ridiculously overpriced. Bulk powders are now cheaper, but leucine is cheaper and has been shown to have similar benefits.
- Rob doesn’t buy that HMB free acid is what’s responsible for the over the top results demonstrated in Dr. Jacob Wilson’s study.
- Suppversity has an analysis of the meta study on HMB.
[40:38] What to do to bring up arms.
- Add 1 inch to upper arm protocol designed by Rob.
- Rob does not like isolation movements for arms.
- Compound pushing and pulling movements work best.
- Rob is fond of closegrip, supinated pullups for biceps.
- Nick Nilsson uses a barbell to wedge his elbows against during pullups. This takes the brachials out of the movement.
[48:45] Kratom talk.
- Red and yellow strains are more relaxing.
- Green and white strains are stimulating.
- Kratom will make your pupils shrink. Don’t drive while taking it.
[58:40] Tip of the day: Vindication after several years.
- Ecdysterone has recently been validated in scientific literature.
- Rob has been an advocate for several years and has gotten a lot of flak for it.
- Authors of the study found a performance enhancement effect of ECDY as well as effects on hypertrophy.
- 12 mg- 48mg/day built more muscle than placebo on a dose dependant basis.
- 4-5 lbs of lean mass was gained in 10 weeks.
- Screening for performance enhancing substances were carried out.
- Look for WADA to ban ECDY in the future.
- WADA funded this study!
