SHR # 2650 :: Omega 3 Levels Help Heart Recovery After Training + What Doctors Don't Understand About Thyroid Hormone

Share

Dr. William Harris - Carl Lanore

The Fatty Acid Research Institute (FARI) has published a new research paper in conjunction with The Cooper Institute on omega-3s and heart rate recovery. Omega-3 fatty acids have a long history of being "heart healthy" but exactly why and how has been less clear. They are known to lower serum triglyceride levels, but the effect is relatively small and it's not clear how much of a risk factor high triglyceride levels is in the first place. So how do the omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA work to be protective? A recent study from the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study (CCLS) and FARI sheds new light on this question. PLUS Omega 3's and death from COVID-19. This new study shows a link to Omega 3 status and the likelihood of dying from this virus. PLUS One of the first things a doctor will prescribe in HRT is thyroid hormone. They tell their patients it will increase energy and help with fat loss. But the truth is physicians really don't understand how thyroid hormone works. And while it may improve fat loss it will not improve energy. In fact it will sap energy and cause hair loss. Here's why.

Show Notes

[2:30] The purpose behind researching omega-3’s effects on heart rate recovery.

[4:35] Bradycardia: are some people sensitive enough for high doses of fish oil to cause it?

[5:40] What portions of the heart do omega-3 affect?

  • The electrical potential of the cellular membrane.
  • They affect the ability for electric current to be transmitted over the membranes

[8:00] Is it possible for n-3 to be the first test to determine electrical conductivity?

  • It doesn’t really work for a-fib in research.

[9:25] A-fib and their connection to AGEs.

  • Perhaps AGE are shorting out electrical impulses in the heart.

[11:04] Study design.

  • Observational in nature.
  • Measured n-3 blood levels
  • Looked for correlation with heart rate recovery to baseline after a basic physical fitness treadmill test.

[13:09] what were the indices of n-3 levels?

  • 4-5% were the typical levels.
  • Optimal level is thought to be 8%
  • Highest group: 9-10%
  • No diminishing returns were observed.

[15:19] It is unknown whether EPA or DHA is the major contributor.

  • We evolved under the influence of both.

[16:45] Are there any antagonistic fatty acids?

[20:00] What % of the population seem to be at the higher % of n-3 index?

  • 3-4% of Americans.
  • >50% of the Japanese.

[21:36] Does Omegaquant offer a guide based on test results?

  • There is a calculator on the website.

[23:32] Triglyceride vs plant n-3.

[31:22] Irregular vs daily consumption of n-3.

  • The body uses substrate in a different manner when it experiences scarcity vs abundance situations.

[35:22] Can Epa/DHA suppress prostaglandins after a workout?

  • They can improve recovery, but we aren’t sure about hindering adaptations.

[40:00] There is no clinical evidence of significant blood thinning.

  • N-3 block n-6 based prostaglandins similar to NSAIDS.
  • They don’t operate like coumadin.
  • They inhibit platelet aggregation.

[44:40] their effects on the Rulaeu  effect has not been studied.

[51:32] The relationship between n-3 index and risk for death from covid.

[56:50] What about their effect on apoptosis?

  • N-3 inhibits mTOR in animal studies.

[1:05:00] Why the doctors have thyroid hormone wrong.

  • It is a natural mitochondrial uncoupler.
  • This means more energy has to be produced to do the same amount of work.
  • The result is feeling hot, sluggish, and uncomfortable.
