SHR # 2662 :: When, not What You Eat May Reduce Breast Cancer Risk PLUS One Listener's Experience With The Carnivore Diet

Share

Guest: Nicholas Webster, Ph.D. M.A - Mike Hazel

Part 1
Intermittent fasting aligned with circadian rhythms improved insulin levels and reduced tumor growth. Restricting eating to an eight-hour window, when activity is highest, decreased the risk of development, growth and metastasis of breast cancer in mouse models, report researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine, Moores Cancer Center and Veterans Affairs San Diego Healthcare System (VASDSH). The findings, published in the January 25, 2021 edition of Nature Communications, show that time-restricted feeding -- a form of intermittent fasting aligned with circadian rhythms -- improved metabolic health and tumor circadian rhythms in mice with obesity-driven postmenopausal breast cancer. with Nicholas Webster, Ph.D. M.A - Source: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-020-20743-7

Part 2
One man's journey to find a diet that improved his health and energy levels long term lead to an N=1 experiment. He went from Vegan to Keto to Carnivore. Each diet provided different benefits and drawbacks. His findings and results will surely surprise you. with Mike Hazel

Show Notes

[4:35] what was the inspiration behind this research?

  • The obesity cancer correlation.

[8:45] Does aromatase play a role in this link?

  • Another possibility is the chronic inflammation from obesity.
  • It is most likely related to hyper insulinemia.

[15:20] Study design.

  • Obese mouse model on high fat diet with breast tumors.
  • One group ate freely, one group was time restricted.
  • Calories were controlled.
  • The Ad lib group grew fatter. The restricted group maintained.
  • The livers had a healthier status in the time restricted group.

[23:40] Methods to analyze the effect on tumors.

[32:17] Did the production of ketone bodies contribute to the results?

  • It is more likely due to attrition of the tumor.

[37:00]Observing apoptosis.

[42:00] over suppressing mTOR is a folly.

[54:24] Time restricted eating templates.

  • The main factor is to get a 14-16 fasting window overnight.

[1:07:30] When did Mike first become fascinated with diet?

  • Tried veganism in his mid 30’s.
  • He initially felt great after excluding processed foods from his diet.
  • Transitioned off of veganism shortly after- experienced no large shifts in weight.

[1:22:27] Started keto 1.5 years ago.

  • Dropped wheat, dairy and vegetable oils.
  • Lost weight
  • Fixed sinus problems and sleep apnea as well as joint pain.
  • He is now doing keto in more of a carnivore style fashion.
  • He also practices time restricted feeding.

[1:29:50] No strength loss.

  • His body composition and skin quality improved.
  • LDL did go up
  • Blood triglycerides dropped.

[1:32:40] This diet does not restrict his social life.

  • He doesn’t use much cooking oil, but his go to is coconut oil or ghee.

[1:34:50] Doesn’t use protein bars.

[1:39:30] He supplements with collagen.

[1:45:22]It is simple for Mike to eat intuitively.
