Dr. Michael Platt, MD

Excess adrenaline is a huge problem in our population today. especially with the love affair we have with caffeine. Many conditions thought to be incurable like Fibromyalgia, ADHD as well as sleep problems, colic in babies and bed wetting in young children can be traced back to excessive adrenaline production. On today's SHR we will discuss this as well as ways you can reverse this condition including a specific dietary protocol.

SHR # 2370 :: Adrenal Dominance

Show Notes:

[1:55] Lack of sleep and how it relates to grinding and stimulants.

  • Sleep drastically improves when stims are given up.

[4:08] Why isn’t anyone paying attention to adrenal dominance?

  • Doctors are not trained to treat underlying causes.

[5:00] Conditions that trace back to adrenal dominance.

  • Chronic pain
  • Insomnia
  • Restless leg syndrome, bruxism, ADHD, and road rage.
  • Depression and addiction.

[7:28] Genetic determinants are the primary cause of excess adrenaline.

  • Excess adrenaline is the primary cause of drug overdose.

[9:42] Case studies of adrenaline dominance.

  • Age is not necessarily correlated with the ability to handle adrenaline.

[12:11] Circadian rhythms, blue light, and adrenaline.

  • Adrenaline dominance has a simpler cause than blue light.
  • The body releases adrenaline because a lack of glucose is sensed.

[14:25] How can we prevent waking at night?

  • Progesterone levels are important, but other factors such as nutrition play into the equation.
  • Progesterone blocks adrenaline, estrogen, and insulin.

[27:34] Micro vasculature and constant adrenaline prevalence.

  • The number one cause of peripheral neuropathy is excess adrenaline.
  • Progesterone cream can help.

[30:05] Carl’s Oura ring would not read his heart beat around 3:00-4:00 p.m. from adrenaline constricting his capillaries in his heart.

  • Insulin is highest around this time. This will cause a drop in blood sugar and a subsequent rise in adrenaline.

[32:25] How long does it take to beat adrenaline dominance?

  • .It can be reduced within 24 hours.

[34:24] Adrenaline’s effect on heart beat.

  • Eventually the heart becomes desensitized to adrenaline and can fail to beat.

[36:00] Adrenal fatigue does not actually exist as far as we know.

  • The low cortisol levels measured by naturopathic doctors is due to the cortisol not making it into saliva.

[37:27} Type II diabetes and adrenaline.

  • Adrenaline is the number one cause of increased A1C.

[38:45] Frequent urination and adrenaline.

  • Frequent urination is a sign of too much adrenaline.
  • Urgency incontinence is a side effect of adrenaline dominance.
  • Chronic interstitial cystitis- pain in the bladder 24 hours of the day. It is caused by adrenaline.

[47:20] How to treat excess adrenaline.

  • Find the cause. This will be anything that causes glucose to drop too low.
  • The brain uses glucose and ketones.
  • Vegetables are an excellent source of glucose for the brain because most of them digest slowly and do not cause a massive insulin spike.
  • Adding MCT oil to your diet can help provide ketones to the brain.
  • Dr. Platt is a fan of anything that raises ketone levels.
  • C-7 and C-9 capricyllic acids convert into ketones very efficiently.

[53:00] Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s are a result of insulin resistance of the brain.

  • The brain can produce its own insulin.

[54:50] Progesterone cream on the hnads.

  • The strength of the cream matters. You want a dose of 50 mg. This dose will block adrenaline, estrogen, and insulin.
  • The best places to apply the cream are the forearms and the neck.
  • Occipital neuritis and tinnitus can be treated with progesterone cream.

[1:01:08] Fasting and adrenaline.

  • Intermittent fasting is okay as long as you are in ketosis.

[1:06:30] Melatonin and adrenaline.

  • Melatonin is antagonistic to DHEA.
  • The body releases adrenaline at night. This releases sugar in the body that is not getting utilized efficiently.

[1:20:28] Controlling adrenaline.

  • Meditation, breath work,
  • Provide the right nutrients to the brain.
  • Oxytocin can help but will not solve the problem.
