DES had a second medical use besides prevention of miscarriage: chemically castrating men with prostate cancer. The dose required for chemical castration is 3mg per day; the starting dose for treatment of miscarriage was 5mg per day. Testosterone plays a crucial role in driving male development, so what are the consequences likely to be if an unborn male child is exposed to high doses of a chemical castration agent for a large part of the pregnancy? There's an untold side to the DES story: that of the DES sons. Among the ones I've been in contact with over the past year, there are four really common groups of problems: * infertility * intersex-relate d genital abnormalities including undescended testes, hypospadias and micropenis * chronically low testosterone levels and other endocrine problems *psychological problems, including ADHD and depression, and often gender identity problems too.

Did you know that DES was the first drug to be evaluated and cleared by the then fledgling FDA around 1938-9? Thus there has been enormous pressure on the FDA to deny responsibility for not having revealed the known effects on animals at the time, which should have prevented the drug being permitted in pregnancy. The US Govt. couldn't allow this new, authoritative Govt. body going down in flames.
