SHR # 2428 :: BEST OF: Seeing The Bigger Picture - Sustainable Strength Gains

Share

Wade Johnson

This show was not Coach Johnson's first appearance on SHR. He first appeared in early 2006. This show aired in March of 2007. I've know Wade for a lot longer than I've been doing the podcast so it was a comfortable chat as I was still a little stiff behind the mic. I don't even have any of the old notes OR SHOW DESCRIPTION SINCE ITS LONG BEEN REMOVED FROM THE SERVER. Its about getting strong and staying strong and in light of the fact that Coach Wade keeps winning medals in Olympic lifting (his new love) and PowerLifting (his original love) at his advanced old-ass age (I can say that because I'm older than him.. just call me dirt) I think you should listen to this interview every day for a week because if that old proof pudding thing is real, he knows stuff because he's not slowing down.

SHR # 2428 :: BEST OF: Seeing The Bigger Picture - Sustainable Strength Gains

Show Notes:

[4:38] What is the biggest mistake that lifters make when it comes to strength?

  • Getting in too big of a hurry.

[13:02] How Wade handles his slumps in lifting.

  • Don’t make excuses to skip the gym, even if you have to go into survival mode in the gym.
  • The only bad session is a missed session.
  • Staying consistent allows you to recover ground quickly when you get serious again.

[17:25] Drugs cause strength levels to cycle when coming off.

  • Relying on drug use as a short cut can derail you mentally and physically.

[27:06] Recovery and its importance.

  • Wade’s methods involve “waving” intensity in the vein of daily undulating periodization with a touch of autoregulation.
  • Sometimes the weight on the bar doesn’t change for 6 weeks to allow adaptations to occur.
  • Consistency is more important than any other variable.

[32:10] The importance of establishing short and long-term goals.

  • Evaluation of how the goal will improve the big picture is important.

[34:18] Bulgarian micro periodization.

[48:55] Patience is a virtue.
