Show Notes:
[3:45] The origins of the term divorce.
- By the 1970’s, the system was not designed to help anymore.
- It was, instead, a way for attorneys to pull funds from a marriage over the long term.
[6:22] Up to 40% of first marriages end in divorce.
- The odds are even worse for second and third marriages.
[12:00] Communication becomes a big after marriage.
[14:17] 3% of men receive alimony.
- 97% walk away with nothing.
[18:46] The wide discretion that judges are allowed to use in a divorce case.
- The upper-middle class white guy gets the short end of the stick in a majority of cases.
[24:50] Children being used as leverage in a divorce.
- Courts generally assume that the child is better off with the mother.
- It would be more practical to have the kids stay put and have a judge rule as to whom gets to stay in the house and on what nights.
- A cap on lawyer fees could be implemented. This would help to ensure a more evenly made playing field.
[37:33] What is the first step in system reform?
- Mitigate the punitive aspect of divorce.
[40:00] The maintenance of standard of living applies to the child as well.
[49:38] Lifetime alimony states.
- The formula is always cited when it is claimed that men are treated equally in divorce, however, that formula is rarely applied.
[1:08:13] Arnold sports festival details.
- The international sports hall of fame is inducting some interesting people: Johnny Damon, Eddie George, and Forrest Griffin.
- The festival is bigger than the summer Olympics in size.
- 22,000 athletes from 80 nations participate over the course of 4 days.
- New sport: Medieval fighting.
