SHR # 2809 :: DHM: A Deeper Dive + Magic Beyond Coffee

Share

Guests: Dr. Alexis Cowan, Ph.D. - James Beshara

In 2020 I did a show about DHM the anti-hangover drug that helped people who were metabolically deranged. This made me wonder what else this compound could do. Turns out, as suspected, it does a LOT more. PLUS Coffee destroyed my gut and my health. I struggled with giving up coffee for years. The hard part of giving up coffee was the bran fog. This nootropic changed all of that and now I'm no longer dependent on coffee. Three months and no coffee!

DHM; A Deeper Dive

[00:06:53]   DHM (Dihydromyricetin)

  • AKA Ampelopsin, Vine tea, Rattan tea
  • Also found in other plant species such as Japanese raisin tree
  • It is the major flavonoid in Ampelopsis plants

[00:10:22]   Traditional and scientific applications:

  • Has been used in Southern China for hundreds of years to treat
    • Fever, Cough, Pain in pharynx and larynx
    • Jaundice, Hepatitis, Nephritis, Halitosis
  • Appetite suppressant
  • Antioxidative and Anti-inflammatory effects
  • Anti-cancer
  • Anti-microbial
  • Regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism
  • Protective against alcohol induced liver injury
  • Improves NAFLD (Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease)
  • Anxiolytic (anti-anxiety)
  • It can directly chelate iron II

[00:19:38]   Cancer is largely driven by the development of chronic inflammation. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidative effects of DHM can reduce rates of carcinogenesis. It promotes cell cycle arrest by trapping cells within a certain phase of the cell leading to apoptosis.

[00:21:28]   DHM modulates glucose and lipid metabolism

[00:28:56]   How to reach Dr Alexis J Cowan (see links below).

[00:33:49]   The anxiolytic effects of DHM were more effective than benzodiazepines during the study on rodents. It exerts its anxiolytic effects via enhanced GABAergic signaling.

[00:37:38]   Despite DHM’s lack of absorption it still showed very remarkable effects on various parts of metabolism and physiology.

[00:38:00]   A discussion on microbe poop ensues

[0041:55]   Dosage in study done on humans for NAFL

  • 600mg pure DHM per day split into 2 doses for 12 weeks.

Hangover remedy

  • 1-15 mg/kg single dose

[00:47:14]   Promises and Pitfalls:

  • Promising effects shown in humans already is the effects on liver metabolism, liver health and metabolic health.
  • DHM shows a wide range of effects in animal models, but these have not been recapitulated in humans yet.
  • DHM shows elevated levels of in vitro activity that needs to be explored in an in vivo setting.
  • Exploration of the bioactivity of DHM metabolites is imperative.

[00:55:20]   Carl elaborates on a study published in The Asian Journal of Andrology about a compound used in Africa for fertility.

[00:58:42]   What would be the best plant, and which part of the plant, to use to get the best absorption?

  • The solubility doubles in warmer conditions, so it should be better in a tea form
  • The leaves from the Ampelopsin are a good plant to try.

Magic Beyond Coffee

Magic Mind:

  • Boost energy: Ceremonial Grade Matcha and Lion’s Mane mushrooms extend your morning energy.
  • Increase focus: Lion’s Mane mushrooms and Bacopa Monnieri boost your clarity and focus.
  • Boost memory: Bacopa Monnieri works to boost your memory-on-memory recall tests.
  • Boost mood: Turmeric curcumin works to boost mood
  • Decrease stress: Ashwagandha and Rhodiola Rosea work to decrease stress and low-grade anxiety.
  • Decrease inflammation: Turmeric and Matcha work to decrease post-exercise inflammation.
  • Heaps of antioxidants: Matcha green tea has over 130x more antioxidants than coffee or regular green tea.
  • Supports immunity: Vitamin C and Echinacea help support the body’s immune system.

[01:07:45]   James tells the story of how he got off of coffee.

[01:19:25]   Green tea or specifically Matcha Tea has a higher caffeine content. However, the caffeine in matcha binds to Catechins (a class of flavonoids) that makes it harder to break down in the body. It is nature’s time release caffeine. It is also paired with l-theanine that dials down the cortisol.

[01:22:27]   We talk energy, we need energy, but what we really need is productivity. The world’s first productivity drink (see link below).

[01:27:39]    Large scale studies have shown twice in the last decade that something as simple as Turmeric is more effective than Prozac.

[01:29:08]   James shares some interesting facts from his book – Beyond Coffee.
