Dr. Craig Banks
About 80 percent of adults experience low back pain at some point in their lifetime. Most of it is acute, or short term, and lasts a few days to a few weeks. But many suffer from chronic life-long pain that makes doing anything, even lying down, unlivable. The magnitude of the burden has grown worse in recent years. In 1990, a study ranking the most burdensome conditions in the U.S. in terms of mortality or poor health as a result of disease put low back pain in sixth place; in 2010, it jumped to third place, with only ischemic heart disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease ranking higher. What's going on?

SHR # 2339 :: Lower Back Pain: What Causes It & What To Do About It
Show Notes:
[1:00] Lower back pain is the 3rd most abundant burdensome condition in America.
[3:00] The case of Ronnie Coleman is discussed.
- He is virtually crippled now.
- Genetics play a role.
- Ronnie could build muscle and could probably build bone just as quickly.
There are 3 main components to arthritis.
- Degenerative (bone spurs)
- Inflammation
- How the joint actually moves.
[5:18] Inflammation is the immune system in action.
- Autoimmunity has to do with the immune system giving a whole scale attack on your joints.
[6:44] Is the lumbar spine always responsible for low back pain?
- Yes. Mostly lumbar and pelvis cause the issue of low back pain.
[7:28] Carl has a triangular vertebrae.
- These are called transition vertebrae.
- They are due to compensation that occurs when movement is not the same on the left and right side of the body.
[9:00] The role of sitting.
- We do not sit on our legs. This is a problem.
- Usually our sacrum is tucked underneath us when we sit.
[9:49] Office chairs affect how we sit.
- Fixing the issue is a matter of resetting by actually standing up and re-sitting to engage stabilizer muscles in the core.
[10:59] Value of ergonomic chairs.
- They should always allow your knees to be below your hips.
[11:30] would chronic PDE-5 inhibitor use play a role in back pain?
- It would depend largely on if you were already inflamed.
[15:17] Focusing on pain.
[16:02] Sleep quality affects pain.
- Anything that excite the nervous system will sharpen your sensitivity to pain.
[17:35] Is compression of the spine a red-herring?
-If you are in an arched position your z-joints will rub together and thicken.
- Compression in conjunction with extension is usually the cause of the injury.
[19:34] What are the contributors to lower back pain?
- Bending at the lumbar spine.
- When the body has to adapt to injury, the compensation that occurs will bleed up and downstream to your spine.
- If the disc isn’t moving somewhat, it will dehydrate and start to degenerate.
- The disc is much less sturdy if your hips are twisted.
[31:41] Spinal flossing.
- Relieves nerve tension by tensioning 1 side at a time.
[33:50] Inversion table.
- Can irritate problems when there are imbalances in the spine or hips.
- It is a wonderful method, but it is non-specific.
- Full inversion usually leads to the spinal erectors taking over and tightening up.
[42:43] Bridging and planking.
- You have to be able to engage those stabilizer muscles.
- Due to the antagonist relationship of the abs and lower back, your core needs to be in a neutral position in order to train true core stability.
- Exercises that do this include planks and dead bugs.
[45:30] Can our infatuation with constantly flexing our abs contribute to lower back pain?
- It is only one contributing factor.
[48:50] what about percussive activator guns?
- They are good for babies, pets, or people with low bone densities.
[50:51] What about sleeping on your side?
- You have to have pillow between your knees to stabilize the hips and ankles.
[56:53] Referral from someone in a situation similar to yours is the first step to finding a good chiro.
- Don’t give up if you have a bad experience with one particular chiro.
- Experience helps in the field of chiro.
[1:00:30] A good chiro will always ask what pre-existing problems you have.
[1:04:30] Kineticream.
- ~13 expensive active ingredients.
- Kineticream.com or amazon.com
- Phil Heath uses it.
- Kineticream also smells good.
