More and more people are developing rhabdomyolysis today. What's going on? Coach Rob suffers yet another bout of it. The symptoms each tome were different, but the outcome was the same. Tips on what to watch out for and how to try and avoid it.

[2:45] Dana Linn Bailey was hospitalized with rhabdo after a crossfit session.
- Rob has had rhabdomyolysis 6 times.
- There is speculation that having rhabdo once makes you more susceptible to get it again.
- Creatinine does not cause rhabdo, but myoglobin does.
[6:32] Myglobinuria- pre-disposes some people to get rhabdo by releasing more myoglobin.
[8:20] Rhabdo can occur as a result of one workout.
- Overuse of intensification techniques.
- Training for too long and not deloading.
- String too many sessions together without a rest day.
[11:40] “ Our civilization pushes every envelope.”
[13:58] “ It might not be back or leg day, but every day is kidney day.”
[15:30] Steroids are not protection from rhabdo.
[20:42] Symptoms of rhabdo.
- General feeling of something being wrong.
- Dramatic loss of strength.
- Myalgia- muscle pain.
- Lapsing into and out of consciousness.
- Extreme confusion.
- Very dark urine.
- Blood in urine.
[27:29] Would it be a good idea to drink water and baking soda on the way to the E.R.?
[29:06] There needs to be a home diagnostic kit to check for rising creatine kinase or myoglobin levels.
- If you are drinking any appreciable amount of water and not urinating, it could be a problem.
[31:45] Maybe the answer is finding a hobby outside of training.
[34:04] Bodybuilders get rhabdo less than powerlifters and cross-fitters.
- John Meadows is a prime example of a strong bodybuilder who trains in a safe and smart fashion.
[35:00] Do warm up sets cound for workout time?
- No. The first working set starts the timer for Rob.
[41:00] Getting stronger using a body building approach.
- Lose the notion that you must get stronger every single day until you die in order to progress.
[45:33] A one day on, two days off protocol is discussed.
- Simply walking on your off days could be enough.
[49:00] Are neck bridges risky?
- They work.
- Alternatives include the 4 way neck machine, neck harness, and statically holding a medicine ball against a wall.
- Don’t get carried away with weight or range of motion.
- A band can serve as a viable alternative as well.
[51:31] Dumbbell lateral raises.
- Do not try to overload with too much weight.
- The upright row is atrocious because of injury potential.
- Rob likes the barbell jammer press. This is very similar to the landmine press.
[55:13] Sissy squats.
- It is a high rep exercise.
- They are harder to overload.
- Vince Gironda was a big fan of them.
[1:01:40] Where does rhabdo begin or end?
- Is there an actual CK or myoglobin levels that is classified as being a marker of rhabdo?
- If you suspect rhabdo, the best that you can do is see a doctor weekly or bi-weekly.
- Make sure to drink enough water.
[1:06:06] Plan your training sessions out based on your previous sessions. Stick to the plan.
