Dr. J. Matt Andry, MD
Cannabidiol (CBD) product popularity is at a frenzied level today. You can find CBD everywhere from grocery stores and farmer's markets to boutique CBD stores. All promising pain reduction, reversal of anxiety, better sleep and balancing the overall nervous system as just some of its benefits. With its growing cult following and acceptance as "safe" research is slow to catch up. A recent study showed that taking CBD in doses suggested by one pharmaceutical CBD-based anti-seizure drug, Epidiolex, damages the liver after just a single dose. Dr. Andry has positioned himself on the bleeding edge of CBD research, speaking and educating all over the country. We discuss this and other emerging research about CBD on todays interview.

SHR # 2366 :: CBD Update: Emerging Science and Implications
Show Notes:
[2:00] In retrospect, Matt was right about most of his predictions and speculations on CBD.
- Matt is not surprised that CBD is exploding in popularity.
[4:00] Cannnabinoids are imprinted into our genetics.
- CBD is analogous to HRT for the endocannabinoid system.
- Only vertebrates and hemp produce cannabinoids.
[6:42] People are using too high of a dosage of CBD.
- We only absorb up to 10% of oil or tincture preparations.
- CBD has biphasic dosing effects.
- 80% of Matt’s patients are on less than 5 mg per day dosages.
[11:00] “For the next six months, all you are going to hear about is how dangerous CBD is.”
[12:09] What’s new about CBD?
- Treatment for migraines and NSAID dependance.
[15:45] The entourage effect is discussed.
- CBD isolate is being pushed because it is so much cheaper than full spectrum extract.
- The difference in cannabis derived vs hemp derived extract is a matter of legality.
[20:00] Who knows what is happening to the other cannabinoids when THC is separated from them?
[21:04] Terpenes.
- They give many of the beneficial effects.
- They are also synergistic with each other.
[22:20] How shipping has changed for CBD.
[30:00] Carl and Matt discuss a recent study showing liver damage from CBD dosages.
- The lowest dosage used was 20mg/kg/day. This dose caused liver damage on day 1.
- This is not surprising because CBD affects the CP450 enzyme cascade..
- The starting dose for this study would be the equivalent of about 6 bottles of a conventional extract.
[37:26] You make an entirely new liver every 3 to 6 months.
[38:13] We need a study on a full spectrum extract.
[42:42] There will be an evolution in the industry to focus on full spectrum extracts.
[49:16] The properties that you should look for in a product.
- The extract should be organic because cannabis is a bioaccumulator.
- The extract should be full spectrum.
- Look for a product that offers lower dose and higher absorption.
- The THC content should not be high enough to get you into trouble.
[55:15] CBD displaces THC from the receptors
[55:50]CBD can slip its way into several different recpetors..
