Dr. Russel Reiter
This show originally aired in January of 2007. All of the things we thought about melatonin, and more, have come to fruition. Now melatonin is being heralded not as much of a sleep aid as it is in reducing chronic inflammation, And it crosses the blood-brain-barrier which is unique for any antioxidant. Oh yeah, its one of the most powerful antioxidants as well. Studies have show that it protects the brain against the disruptive effects of high frequency transmitters like cell phones and cordless phones. It's the one supplement I have used consistently and continuously for over 20 years now. In this first-of-many interviews with Dr. Reiter he talks about using 20 mg of melatonin nightly. In 2018 when I communicated with him last he was up to 60 mg a night. Dr. Reiter is still publishing papers on the pineal gland and its primary hormone melatonin.

[3:16] melatonin production is inhibited by light exposure.
- Tissue levels during the day are indicative of how well uptake occurred during the night.
[5:42] There are specific receptors such as the ganglion and photoreceptors in the skin that react to light exposure.
[6:35] Shift workers are compromised in their melatonin production.
- EMF’s could affect melatonin production, although the evidence is not compelling.
[13:00] Melatonin production slows down as we age.
- The pineal gland loses receptors that are responsible for melatonin production.
- The brain also deteriorates as we age.
[16:40] Melatonin is one of the few antioxidants that will effectively cross the blood brain barrier.
[18:12] Can melatonin slow aging of the brain?
- There is no independent validation of this hypothesis.
- Animals do seem to do better in life when supplementing with melatonin.
- It helps to reduce beat-amyloid plaque by preventing build up.
[25:21] melatonin and the thyroid.
- Melatonin can help prevent hyperthyroidism.
- It improves glucose uptake by the heart under hyperthyroidism.
- The relationship to hypothyroidism is unclear.
- Melatonin can also help to reduce inflammation in the pancreas.
[27:58] Secondary effects on diabetes.
- Melatonin is beneficial in Type II diabetics.
