SHR # 2569 :: CBD May Help Avert Lung Destruction in COVID-19 + BS Science Alert: Plant-based Meats Improve Some Cardiovascular Risk Factors

Share

Dr. Babak Baban & Dr. Jack Yu

Cannabidiol, or CBD, may help reduce the cytokine storm and excessive lung inflammation that is killing many patients with COVID-19, researchers say. While more work, including clinical trials to determine
optimal dosage and timing, is needed before CBD becomes part of the treatment for COVID-19, researchers at the Dental College of Georgia and Medical College of Georgia have early evidence it could help patients showing signs of respiratory distress avoid extreme interventions like mechanical ventilation as well as death from acute respiratory distress syndrome. PLUS When a plant-based meat alternative company pays for the science, is it any wonder that the outcome is in their favor?

Show Notes:

[4:13] Why look at CBD for its effects on the inflammatory process of covid-19?

  • This groups has been researching CBD for years. Covid-19 just presented a problem that CBD could plausibly help.

[6:22] How does CBD suppress inflammation?

  • There are many potential steps.
  • They did not used sars-cov2.
  • Used a synthetic double strand RNA analog to create lung damage..
  • It would be a bad idea to give an anti-inflammatory in the initial stages of covid when your body is suppressing inflammation.
  • Whenever pneumonia-like symptoms appear would be the time to use CBD.

[10:30] could CBD become part of a stack, or is it better used as a stand alone?

  • Part of a stack.
  • It is an immune regulator.

[12:30] Study design.

  • Performed on rodents.’
  • Received CBD intra peritoneal injection once per day.
  • Isolated CBD was used.
  • 5mg/kg dose for the mice.

[22:40] How soon after did changes occur?

  • Took 4 days to see initial results.
  • This would be equivalent to 2 doses.

[23:48] Were there any other observations on the rodents’ behavior?

[36:50] Are we doing a disservice by not consuming foods that contain endocannabinoids?

[39;25] How do the 2 CB receptor play into this?

[40:50] Humans don’t produce CBD endogenously.

[42:05] Does dietary fat intake play a role in producing the long chain fatty acid analogs endogenously?

[50:23] The next step in this research.

  • Will this same effect happen in humans?
  • What is the underlying mechanism?

[55:16] CBD isolate is being compared to full spectrum.

[1:03:04] Beyond meat funds a study claiming that the beyond burger is healthier than meat.

  • Define healthy.
  • All forms of meat were possibly lumped into the red meat group ( bologna, hot dogs, etc)
  • There is potential bias from the lead author, who is a vegetarian.,
  • TMAO is correlated with heart disease. It is not causative.
  • Slight drop in LDL of the Beyond group.
  • Beyond group had a slight drop in weight.
