SHR # 2605 :: Study Shows Vitamin E Needed for Proper Nervous System Development + Chronomics Update

Share

Maret Traber Ph.D – Dr. Daniel Elias Martin Herranz – Dr. William Seeds, MD

In research with key ramifications for women of childbearing age, findings by Oregon State University scientists show that embryos produced by vitamin E-deficient zebrafish have malformed brains and nervous systems. PLUS Many have been eagerly waiting for their epigenetic tests results to come back from Chronomics Lab. The wait is over! Test results are going out!

Vitamin E is necessary for zebrafish nervous system development - https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-020-71760-x

Show Notes:

[3:03] what inspired this research?

  • Human studies on vitamin E were lacking.

[4:00]8 different forms of vitamin E.

  • The human body cannot convert forms.
  • There is a protein in the human liver that acts as a lock and key receptor to alpha tocopherol.
  • Gamma- tocopherol can cause problems when oxidized because it does not bind to vitamin C.
  • Alpha tocopherol binds to vitamin c when oxidized.

[8:46] Study design- why use zebrafish?

  • One unique benefit is that a zebrafish goes from egg to swimming within 5 days.

[14:25] Vitamin E is needed for the large caliber axons in the nervous system.

  • The brains, hearts, and livers of the vitamin e deficient zebrafishes’ offspring were screwed up.
  • Phosphatidyl choline is oxidized in the brain when vitamin e is at a deficient level.
  • Vitamin e deficient eggs were also glucose deficient.
  • That inhibits growth of new cells in the eggs.
  • Zebrafish don’t have a liver until 48 hours, but LTP was detected at 6 hours.--- where is it?
  • It was partially found in the yolk, but mostly in the edges of the nueral tube.

[35:25] What is a reasonable dose of vitamin E to supplement with?

  • The latest date shows that the average person is using up 15mg/day.
  • 96% of women and ~ 90% of men don’t even get 12 mg/day.
  • There is an interaction between E and K. If E intake is too high, vitamin k levels seem to drop.
  • It seems to drop mennaquinone-4 in the blood.
  • It is probably wise to take vitamin C and K-2 (MN-4) with any E supplementation.
  • LTP does not recognize the 2 stereo isomers of d-l-alpha tocopherol.

[55:06] Any interaction with the microbiome?

  • The area is wide open for research.
  • Bile helps vitamin E get into the intestinal cell and be packaged with fat.

[57:08] Could vitamin C and E deficiency be contributing to nutritional neuropathies?

[1:01:28] What about the 20% of zebrafish that survived?

  • Their learning was inhibited.

[1:10:00] What was the holdup with chronomics epigenetic testing?
