Dr. Suzanne Turner, MD – Shannan Yorton Penna – Ron Penna
"There's a sucker born every minute" P. T. Barnum. This phrase has never been truer than today as it relates to the “Detox Industry”. Teas, diets, baths and all sorts of other silly things are suggested to “detoxify the body”. But do they really do what people are thinking they do when they think of ridding the toxin load accumulated over years and decades? We discus the realities of detox methods and what they really do against the backdrop of powerful agents and techniques that actually work over time to release and rid your body of the toxins stored in tissues. PLUS The angst about the upcoming holidays and the potential for weight gain is upon us. Let’s be honest, it’s the deserts we fear most. But we have to partake in it or be ostracized by our friends and family. On this episode of Cooking With Shannan she shares her secret holiday recipe for decadent low carb high protein pumpkin cheesecake.
Low Carb / Keto PUMPKIN CHEESECAKE- 12 servings
Almond Flour Cheesecake Crust
1.13 cup blanched almond flour, Amoretti brand or, any blanched version
0.38 cup vital proteins collagen powder (it provides a more dough-like and dense crust-like texture)
2.25 tbsp powdered allulose
0.25 cup butter (melted)
0.75 tsp vanilla extract, Heilia brand Pumpkin Cheesecake Filling
18 oz Cream cheese (softened)
0.75 cup canned pumpkin puree, unsweetened
*Sweetener or your choice: 1 tsp Sucralose or, 3/4 cup powdered allulose or, 3/4 cup powdered erythritol
2.25 large Eggs (at room temperature)
0.75 tsp pumpkin pie spice
0.38 tsp ground cinnamon
0.75 tsp vanilla extract, Heilia brand
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (177 degrees C). Line the bottom of a 9 in (23 cm) springform pan with parchment paper. (You can also try greasing well.)
To make the almond flour cheesecake crust, stir the almond flour, collagen or protein powder, and sweetener together.
Whisk together the melted butter and vanilla, then stir into the dry ingredients, pressing with the spoon or spatula, until well combined. The dough will be slightly crumbly.
Press the dough into the bottom of the prepared pan. Prick gently with a fork all over. Bake for about 12-15 minutes until barely golden. Let cool.
Now beat the cream cheese and powdered sweetener together at low to medium speed until fluffy. Beat in the pumpkin puree, pumpkin pie spice, cinnamon and vanilla. Beat in the eggs, one at a time. (Keep the mixer at low to medium the whole time; too high speed will introduce too many air bubbles, which we don't want.)
Pour the filling into the pan over the crust. Smooth the top with a spatula. (Use a pastry spatula for a smoother top if you have one that fits into the pan.)
Bake for about 40-50 minutes until the center is almost set, but still jiggly.
Remove the cheesecake from the oven. If the edges are stuck to the pan, run a knife around the edge. (But, do not remove the springform edge just yet.) Cool the cheesecake in the pan on the counter to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 4 hours, until completely set. (Do not try to remove the cake from the pan before chilling.)
Serve with whipped cream and/or a sprinkle of cinnamon or, vanilla ice cream even!
Show Notes:
[1:55] there is a misunderstanding as to what detoxification is.
- It is not some instant process.
- A detox tea can help with the toxins in your colon, but it will not do anything for the toxins that are stored in your fat cells.
- It would take ~ a year of nightly Epsom salt baths to move the needle on mercury levels in your body.
[7:53] Real detox strategies.
- Anything that really works needs to be performed under the supervision of a physician.
- Your immune response also needs to be settled first because true toxins in the bloodstream will cause inflammation.
- Metabolically flexible cells will clean themselves via autophagy.
[11:50] Most of the bad actors are stored in fat.
- They will actually hide in the cell membrane as well.
- Cell death will result in a release of toxins as well.
- Intermittent fasting or exogenous ketones facilitate better autophagy.
- So does rapamycin and spermidine.
- EMF/ RF and technology should also be detoxed from.
[18;15] Agents that can help coax toxins out of the cell.
- A binder to prevent reabsorption in the intestines.
- Activated charcoal between meals, away from any supplements that you are using.
- Bentonite clay, pyruvate clay.
- Need to be having bowel movements 2-3x/day.
- EDTA
- V. DMSO or DMSA.
[23:20] How important is it to get amalgam fillings taken out?
- It depends on the location of the filling and the health of the patient.
[25:05] Do you have to assess a person’s renal/hepatic function before giving EDTA?
[31:50] The bioaccumulation of metabolic waste.
- The biggest accumulation comes from misfolded proteins from oxidative stress. TD-43 is one example.
[34:11] Blood donations.
- Stimulate new stem-cell production.
- The body can get rid of iron.
- Pentosan polysulfate can influence hecydin production to get rid of iron from the blood.
- Cellular inflammation can hinder the process, increasing the reactivity of copper.
- Blood letting is an option, but it is not necessary.
- Blood donations have a correlation with longer life expectancy, to a point.
- GHK-Cu can aid the process of ridding the body of iron.
[41:20] Real detox does exist, but it requires stronger compounds. How long before results come?
- 3 months- 3 years depending on the preceding prep.
- Order of operations for detox: Bowels, liver, and then the blood.
[48:24] Sauna and sweating as a detox method.
- Sweating probably has the most benefits.
- Towel off and then shower to prevent reabsorption.
- Replace lost electrolytes.
- Sauna acts as an exercise mimetic of sorts.
[51:10] Photobiomodulation for detox. Does the sun play a role?
- Stimulates the clock genes to turn on NADH production.
- Cells function optimally when circadian rhythms are properly set.
[53:10] Noise detox.
- Noise cancelling headphones are great. Try 5 minute sessions 2x/day.
[54:06] Using dietary fat for detox.
- Low fat diets can lower the body’s ability to handle toxic load and lower toxic excretions.
