Chris Masterjohn, PhD

Chris earned his PhD in Nutritional Sciences from the University of Connecticut. He served as a postdoctoral research associate in the Comparative Biosciences department of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Illinois. He was also an Assistant Professor of Health and Nutrition Sciences at Brooklyn College.

In the fall of 2016, he made the decision to leave academia and pursue entrepreneurship a transition he completed on January 1, 2017. [00:29:00]     Vitamin D3 from a preventative standpoint

  • Infection risk cannot be eliminated but at least halved by maintaining Vitamin D3 levels between 50 and 60 ng/L (nanograms per liter)

[00:29:40]    Vitamin D3 from a therapeutic standpoint

  • Individuals with low Vitamin D status, 10 to 15 days into their illness and with respiratory failure, will probably not benefit from oral Vitamin D3 consumption at that point
  • However, for already very sick individuals a successful Spanish protocol had the following outcome:
    • Cut the risk of ICU admission with as high as 98%
    • Cut the death rate by approximately 70 to 80%
  • Under conditions of strong inflammation, oral Vitamin D3 is synthesized at a very slow rate. The protocol therefore utilized the administration of Calcifediol 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3). This is the form of Vitamin D produced in the liver. The approximate suggested dosage is
    • 532 mcg (micrograms) on day 1 followed by 266 mcg on days 3 and 7 and then 266 mcg once a week
  • For individuals who keep their Vitamin D status at an optimal range, around 50 to 60 ng/L, the following is suggested:
    • 20,000 IUs (international units) a day for the first week following by 10,000 IUs a day in the second week until symptoms subside.
  • Individuals with a Vitamin D status in the mid-range, the following is suggested:
    • A loading dose of a 100,000 IUs on day 1 followed by 20,000 IUs a day for the first week and 10,000 IUs a day in the second week until symptoms subside.

[00:36:09]    An optimal systemic zinc status is very protective against acquiring upper respiratory tract and other viral infections. The data on zinc and the common cold are not that great and not very consistent when you are supplementing people with capsules.

[00:38:36]      Zinc acetate lozenges are the best treatment for the common cold, because zinc acetate ionizes in the mouth which causes the zinc ions to spread throughout the nose and throat interfering with the virus getting into the cells to replicate.

[00:38:50]    Zinc gluconate is half as effective as zinc acetate.

[00:39.48]    It can take up to a year of supplementing a hundred milligrams a day of zinc to bring systemic zinc levels back up to normal.

[00:43:25]    A suggested dosage would be 7 to 15 mg (milligrams) of zinc 4 times a day taken for a year after which a maintenance dose could be taken.

[00:46:09]    2 Randomized control trials (RCTs) showed the benefit of administering Omega 3 fatty acids in both high and lower dosages. Moderate Covid cases recovered faster on the higher dosages and severe covid cases showed a dramatic reduction in mortality with lower dosages.

[00:46:40]    600 mg to 1000 mg of a combination of EPA and DHA per day might reduce COVID mortality by 70% and would also contribute to the resolution of inflammation.

[00:51:56]    Long Covid is complex and heterogeneous, but it is primarily a lingering inflammation presenting as, among other, a lingering cough (inflammation in the lungs) or ongoing fatigue (brain inflammation).

[00:57:24]    Arginine is an amino acid (building block of protein) that you get by consuming protein or in supplement form as L-Arginine.

  • Arginine is a donor for nitric oxide production which assists in Vaso dilation.
  • As COVID causes clotting in small blood vessels, dilating the blood vessels could prevent a serious blockage
  • In the lungs, nitric oxide combines with glutathione to make nitroso glutathione, which is the endogenous bronchodilator.

[01:02:00]    An ongoing Italian RCT made the incredible discovery that with administration of Arginine to patients with severe Covid and respiratory failure, the death rate was reduced significantly. None of the patients in the controlled group died.

[01:08:39]    Natural immunity and vaccination are not mutually exclusive. Some data suggest that adding the vaccine to the natural infection or vice versa enhances the immunity.

[01:09:31]    It is however clearly established in the literature that immunity from prior infection is equal to, or better than immunity from the vaccine. In most contexts is more durable, lasts longer, and in some contexts is wildly superior and in no context is inferior.

[01:10:07]    Natural immunity is far more robust to these changes in variants than the vaccine is.

[01:10:43]    Natural immunity provides immunity to many targets on the virus, whereas the vaccine exclusively provides immunity to the spike protein.

[01:18:06]     The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) study on natural immunity showed that natural immunity is five times less effective than the vaccine at protecting you from a future COVID case. A very interesting discussion follows on why this study is majorly flawed.

[01:26:26]    The future is certainly unclear on what the long-term effects of the vaccine and booster vaccines could have on humanity.
