Muscle Centric Medicine Plus Ketone Ester; Everything You May Want to Know
with Dr. Gabrielle Lyon - Frank Llosa

The medical orthodoxy has ignored the role of muscle and strength play in health and longevity and its been a huge frustration of mine for many years. Since on of the first studies we discussed on this show in 2006 by the California Veterans Administration that showed of 60,000 men followed the strongest men at the beginning of the study, who maintained their strength throughout the 20 years follow-up were still alive and the weakest men at the beginning and throughout had the highest all cause mortality rates. This established the underpinning of science validating "the strong live longer." Today we talk with a physician that practices "Muscle Centric Medicine" PLUS Ketones have been shown to have so many benefits. Lowering insulin levels, reducing gut inflammation, influencing fat loss. Today we investigate a new fun way to get more ketones in your life! Go to http://shrnetwork.biz/ketoneaid to learn more about KetoneAid and use code SHR for 10% off.

About the Guest:

Dr. Lyon received her doctorate in osteopathic medicine from the Arizona College of Osteopathic Medicine and is board-certified in family medicine.
She earned her undergraduate degree in Human Nutrition from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign where she studied vitamin and mineral metabolism, chronic disease prevention and management and the physiological effects of diet composition.
She also completed a research/clinical fellowship in Nutritional Science and Geriatrics at Washington University in St. Louis.

[00:04:54]   Gabrielle Lyon shares 2 experiences that drew her into nutritional and muscle centric medicine.

[00:15:39]   -I believe that muscle as an endocrine organ can be measured just like another organ.

  • looking at blood markers post-resistance exercise,
    • to see the changes in hormones, interleukin 6, MPO (Myeloperoxidase:

[00:18:18]   Something that happens as we age is the tissue becomes harder to stimulate. It becomes more insulin resistant. It becomes less efficient at sensing nutrients or energy (calories) and less efficient at the utilization of these substrates. Individuals as we age, require more dietary protein, more exercise and muscle stimulus.

[00:21:05]   If the desire is for us truly to get better and to have a stronger society, it is through physical and mental strength. There are ways in which we can develop individuals to be more resilient.

[00:32:22]   When women go through perimenopause and menopause, most women gain a lot of weight, estrogen decreases, and they become more testosterone dominant. Body fat accumulates around their belly, but that does not necessarily mean that their testosterone levels are high or even in an optimal range. This is the time to really start training and push it up a notch, not scale back, with both resistance and HIIT training.

[00:35:57]   The risk factor in HIIT is required for the brain changes needed to take the food you eat and do something different with it than turning it into fat.

[00:36:29]   Contracting skeletal muscle, secretes myokines. One of those myokines is BDNF (Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a key molecule involved in plastic changes related to learning and memory), and it improves cognition and elevates mood.

[00:37:01]   What do you think about this: Part of the fat gain in women as they encroach menopause or peri menopause, is actually the body's desire to produce more estradiol and leveraging adipose tissue because of the aromatase enzyme.

  • If that theory were to hold true that the body gains weight during menopause, then everybody would gain weight and not everybody does.

[00:38:00]   A study showed that one 40-minute bout of resistance training rid the targeted muscle tissue of 60% of senescent cells. It was conducted in a high protein diet as well as a low protein diet to see if mTOR (Mammalian target of rapamycin) really make senescent cells. Do you think senescent cells are as important as it is made out to be nowadays?

  • Senescent cells are just something that happens during aging. If we were to define what is senescence, it is the slow deterioration of normal physiological processes
  • The only way to improve immune senescence is exercise.

[00:41:07]   A remarkably interesting discussion on mTOR ensues.

[00:50:24]   What do you think about the Carnivore Diet?

  • There is that individual biochemistry within every person and the carnivore diet for a brief period of time can be beneficial, by doing a Carnivore Reset for instance.
  • It is very limiting.
  • Polyphenols are especially important.
  • Foods that are rich in purples, blues, and greens are essential.
  • There's variability for everybody and every diet can be used for short sprints.
  • I believe very strongly that red meat is part of a healthy diet.
  • It is one of the foods that has really evolved our brain.
  • It is high in bioavailable iron, zinc, selenium, creatine and has all the essential amino acids
  • The correct amounts required to stimulate muscle needed for constant turnover and repair that becomes more difficult as you age.

[00:54:47]   Some jaw dropping statistics on what the average American consumes in year

About the Guest:

Frank Llosa is the founder and CEO of KetoneAid – the same ketone ester company that raised over $150,000 on Indiegogo (5X their projected target!) to continue research on their ketone ester product. They had so many people pre-order the product, that they had to stop the offer. He got into the wide world of ketones after his wife’s godfather – the creator of the exogenous ketone Dr. Richard Veech tapped him on the shoulder.

Ketone Ester; Everything You May Want to Know

[01:03:16]   Ketones:

  • Are protective and preserve muscle mass.
  • Lower insulin levels, even in the face of a high carbohydrate meal.
  • Reduce inflammation in the gut.
  • Power the heart and the brain during times of stress.
  • Great for working out if you want to train fasted.

[01:04:04]

  • exogenous ketones is this umbrella category of consuming your Ketones as opposed to being on a Keto diet.
  • It is important to understand that when you drink these exogenous ketones, it will put ketones in your blood, but it is not burning fat.

[01:05:16]   Ketogenesis takes place in hepatocyte mitochondria, while ketolysis involves utilization of ketone bodies in the mitochondria of peripheral tissues.

[01:08:59]   The only time you are going to “feel” an exogenous ketone is if you are (a) metabolically deranged or (b) your brain is starting to experience some form of mismanagement of glucose, insulin resistance of the brain.

[01:10:10]   Listen to a riveting discussion and explanation on how companies load inferior keto products with caffeine to make you “feel” the ketones.

[01:12:18]   Carl explains why he really likes the KetoneAid product.

[01:14:33]   Frank Llosa talks more about the newest product in the range called KE1

[01:14:57]   The R1,3 Seltzer and R1,3 G&T, which is technically an non-toxic ethanol, are also explained.

[01:22:55]  BHB- Beta-hydroxybutyrate is a chemical that is made by the body. It supplies energy when not enough carbohydrates or sugars have been eaten

  • An informative explanation and individual experiences follow.
