Reversing Atrophywith Prolotherapy and PRP; New Study
with guest Adam Girmann MD Candidate
Injury, especially to nerve innervation, can cause a rapid degradation to muscle referred to as atrophy. Having a leg in a cast for a couple months makes a muscle shrink by up to 40% quickly. For a bodybuilder this is tragic. The rapid loss of hard-earned muscle can derail a career. Regaining that muscle may not happen if the nerves are damaged permanently. This new study shows the possibility of a work-around that may not even require working the muscle. And may even preserve muscle and halt atrophy.

Reversing Atrophy with Prolotherapy and PRP
[00:06:29] Adam shares the original name of the study as well as some other introductory information.
[00:08:00] Carl wonder’s if the fascia was resistant to growing along with the muscle and caused this extreme pressure on the nerve, Adam replies.
[00:10:00] The discussion turns the possibility of deep tissue body work correcting some of the issues.
[00:11:16] Adam expounds on how the diagnosis was done via ultrasound and how they could spot the impingement of the nerve.
[00:14:00] Adam explains how the hydro dissection with dextrose (prolotherapy) was performed.
[00:15:30] He goes on to describe the two-fold treatment.
[00:15:44] Carl explains prolotherapy in lay terms.
[00:16:12] Adam confirms and joins the conversation by describing what PRP (Platelet-rich plasma therapy) is.
[00:16:36] Carl tells a story about an injury that he had many years ago and how he did a version of prolotherapy on himself.
[00:19:41] Adam and Carl talks about what they used for prolotherapy in the fascial plane.
[00:23:16] The conversation turns to the possible benefits of administering peptides together with the PRP.
[00:29:36] Both Adam and Carl replies to a listener’s question about an issue he has with a shrunken thigh due to nerve damage from a diskectomy.
[00:33:53] Adam replies to a question of Carl on what the value of hydro dissection would be for individuals who do not have a nerve-injury but want to stretch fascia of the muscle.
[00:35:11] Follow the discussion on the need for and uses of PRP.
[00:46:14] Adam eloquently replies to a question from a listener on 30% atrophy on her left calf and hydro dissection not making any difference. Carl joins in with viable solutions too.
[00:50:43] Carl talks about a procedure (EMG study) he had done on his spine and legs.
