Discovery; Mitigating Migraines
[00:08:24] When migraines were first discovered they were called hypoglycemic headaches back in the 1920s. In later years people were trying to find small pathways, distinct mechanisms, to target with a small molecule. The vascular theory in migraine became very prominent for a while, but the whole vaso-vessel theory was debunked.
[00:10:13] Dr Elena continues the explanation on migraine metabolic theories and talks about how she got interested in the subject of migraines, energy deficiency and dietary changes.
[00:16:30] Tune in for a remarkably interesting part of the discussion related to hormones, birth control, hypoglycemia, insulin sensitivity and their connection to migraines.
[00:21:35] The brain is a separate ecosystem that is protected by the blood brain barrier. What malfunction is occurring in the brain of the person who suffers from migraines.
- The blood brain barrier is particularly important because we do not want foreign substances to enter the vulnerable brain.
- That also means that only 3 fuel sources (lactate, glucose, and ketone bodies/beta- hydroxybutyrate) can make it into the brain easily, the rest has to be reassembled inside of the brain.
- The brain cannot store energy well, it is completely dependent on supply of energy from the rest of the body.
- It can only rely on these 3 substances and 2 of them are usually never around, in the western diet it is glucose predominantly.
- The brain makes up only 2% of our mass, but it consumes 20 to 25% of our energy needs.
- That puts it into a situation where it is susceptible to an energy crisis.
- Migraine is a hugely complex civilization disease, and this is something that is especially important to understand.
- Dr Elena elaborates further – must listen!
[00:27:25] Dr Elena answers Carl’s question on several types of migraines.
[00:30:00] Dr Elena talks about her new book coming out – Mastering Migraines Metabolically.
[00:38:23] The discussion continues on the possible correlation between migraines, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s that are all metabolic diseases.
[00:40:00] The conversation turns to toxins and how the contribute to civilization diseases.
[00:43:44] Carl talks about an interesting book he has at home – Fortunes and Formulas. An interesting conversation develops.
[00:46:27] Dr Elena expounds on Type II diabetes and migraines and factually speaks on insulin resistance.
[00:48:56] Carl shares a riveting story about en experience he had with a visual migraine and Dr Elena joins in with the 4 distinct stages if migraines.
- The pre-monitory/prodrome phase.
- Sensory disturbances/Aura phase.
- Pain phase.
- Postdrome phase.
[00:58:53] Mitochondrial health is at the core of most civilization diseases, which are neuropsychiatric or even metabolic diseases such as diabetes, cancer etc. Chronic fatigue syndrome is mitochondrial dysfunction. Dr Elena shares her experience with Chronic fatigue and mitochondrial repair.
[01:01:52] Dr Elena answers a question on epilepsy.
