Cluster Sets: A Deep Dive
[00:04:21] Time under tension is important, but time under tension for 1 rep is not going to do the same as time under tension for 40 reps. Volume is king, but you gradually get weaker and managing fatigue is a big problem.
- Adam explains how he started to focus on cluster sets and why.
- He goes on to describe what cluster sets are.
[00:08:00] Carl illustrates his resent training method and shares a descriptive metaphor.
[00:09:00] The discussion continues on the fact that you do not have to crush yourself in the gym to make progress.
[00:12:45] Adam expands on the concept of progressing while incorporating rest periods.
[00:13:50] What do you do you think training to failure really is? Adam replies.
[00:15:25] Carl talks about the signs of overtraining and shares his personal view. Adam joins in.
[00:19:40] Adam explains how to approach transitioning a specific movement a cluster set.
[00:22:20] The 5 x 5 method was designed to build strength, not muscle size. Carl goes on to define how he would approach the cluster sets. Adam agrees and expounds on how people conflate being exhausted with progress.
[00:30:35] Adam elaborates on the article he wrote on cluster lifts.
[00:33:05] Carl tells a story of a personal experience he had in a gym, alone, late at night……? The discussion follows the “suicide grip” and Carl shares a tip to increase grip strength.
[00:40:10] The conversation turns to eccentric movement training after which the topic segues to “the gym ego.”
[00:53:00] The next topic of discussion is the inversion table.
[00:59:00] Adam reminds listeners that a good way to protect your spine from injuries is to use the cluster set method. Carl adds that by using a hip belt for squatting you could also minimize injuries.
[00:59:45] In closing Adam summarizes the cluster set technique.
