Fiber is Good for You, Except When it's Not
with Guests Dr. Heather Armstrong, MSc, PhD - Dr. Eytan Wine, MD, PhD, FCRPC

People who suffer from inflammatory bowel disease may soon have access to personalized dietary guidelines to keep them feeling well, thanks to new research on how dietary fiber affects the disease.

The research team discovered that certain types of dietary fiber cause an inflammatory response in some patients, causing symptoms to worsen.

They are now working to develop a stool test to examine the microbes found in each patient’s gut in order to predict who will have the negative response, so they can tailor dietary recommendations and treatment for individual patients. Music

Show Notes:

Fiber is Good for You, Except When it is Not

[00:03:50]   Both Heather and Eytan starts the interview by explaining what lead them to this study.

[00:07:21]   Carl makes the statement that fiber has not been our friend until we became metabolically broken and asks their opinions. Heather comments on that.

[00:12:00]   The discussion turns to the diverse types of fiber if there are good vs bad fibers. They discuss the main 3 features of fiber:

  • Solubility
  • Fermentation
  • Viscosity

[00:15:33]   Should an individual rely solely on mapping the microbiome or do they just eliminate the foods that are stimulating the unwanted effects of their microbiome? Both experts respond.

[00:20:10]   Follow the conversation on people who are on low residue diets.

[00:22:40]   Heather illustrates how the research was designed for this study.

[00:24:24]   Carl talks about when probiotics became popular and says that there is a lot to be said for a diet promoting the microbes that then do positive things with the fiber. Heather joins in and Eytan shares his view as well.

[00:35:55]   Carl states that hormones influence gut microbial diversity. When oxytocin is present regularly, the gut tends to have a higher degree of l-reuteriary. He asks if we see gender differences in these types of conditions. And if we do, do we see women's guts changing dramatically post menopause? Eytan responds and then hands over to Heather.

[00:41:00]   The conversation turns to patterns that may have been discovered during the study that could help people to pay attention to their own bodies.

[00:46:44]   Carl shares how he gave himself small intestinal bacterial overgrowth and then proceeds to ask the following questions, which both Heather and Eytan replies to:

  • can we seed the gut with the correct microbe or fiber once we realize the relationship between a specific microbe and fiber?
  • can we alter the immune response?
  • can we build the mucosal barrier back into the gut by taking things like glutamine or raw egg?

[00:47:51]   Eytan explains the difference between IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and IBD (inflammatory bowel diseases)

[00:58:25]   A discussion ensues on:

  • BPC157 (Body Protection Complex 157)
  • JAK inhibitors
  • Thymosin Alpha 1

[01:03:00]   Carl states that all food is an endotoxin to some degree and both Eytan and Heather weigh in on this statement.

[01:05:35]   Oligosaccharides in human breast milk is the next topic up for discussion.

[01:08:14]   Listen to Carl talk about:

  • him being cautious of probiotics
  • the human antimicrobial peptide LL-37 and how it helps with addiction
  • cravings start in the gut

[01:12:45]   Heather reiterates that studies have shown that most of the pro probiotics available on the market and even prebiotics do not actually have any scientific evidence to back them. VSL#3 is one that actually does have some scientific evidence to back its use. She elaborates further.
