Low Carb for Healthy Teeth: Not Fluoride
with Guest Dr. Philippe Pierre Hujoel, PhD, DDS, MSD, MS
Prominent organizations including the World Health Organization and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have dismissed low-carbohydrate diets that prevent tooth decay in favor of recommending high-carbohydrate diets which rely on fluoride and food fortification to mitigate dental damage and nutritional shortcomings, a University of Washington researcher says.

Low Carb for Healthy Teeth: Not Fluoride
[00:03:50] Dr Philippe explains why he did this study – remarkable!
[00:07:00] The discussion turns to why organizations like the WHO and USDA (among others), do not talk about nutrition, especially sugar, affecting dental health.
[00:11:05] Carl shares some interesting facts about Dr Paul Dudley White and what he feels should be done with said organizations.
[00:13:22] How is sucrose different from fructose from fruit or any other sugar? Does that not also drive dental cavities? Dr Philippe responds.
[00:18:15] Dr Philippe describes what is special about sucrose that it drives some changes in the oral microbiome and explains the role of pH plays.
[00:20:40] The conversation segues to evidence that proves that cavities can refill themselves with minerals if the oral health is addressed.
[00:22:00] Dr Philippe responds to a question of a listener’s on glucose vs fructose.
[00:31:38] There is an appropriate use for fluoride, assuming that people will not eliminate sugar from the diet, follow the conversation. Dr Philippe also shares a fascinating fact – oral hygiene does NOT have an impact on dental cavities, if it has, it is minor!
[00:34:00] A listener shares his oral hygiene regime and asks Dr Philippe’s opinion on it. Carl weighs in on the topic too, as well as plaque on teeth being a possible indication of plaque in the arteries. The discussion turns to fluoride.
[00:38:57] Are there people that have superior oral health while eating anything they wish? Dr Philippe replies with evidence from some studies regarding mineralization diets.
[00:41:30] Carl explains how force can promote teeth and bone mineralization. Dr Philippe joins in.
[00:48:05] Dr Philippe conveys what he hopes people will take away not this from this study, but also from his journey that led him to the study.
[00:51:40] Dr Philippe mentions that an exceptionally low carb/carnivorous type diet might lead to a Vitamin C deficiency, supplementing is thus vital. He goes on to say that beef does not contain vitamin C, Carl respectfully disagrees and explains why.
