Completing aerobic exercise at the beginning of a fast accelerates the production of BHB throughout the fast without altering subjective feelings of hunger, thirst, stomach discomfort, or mood. Insulin and the insulin/glucagon ratio experience a marked reduction within the first 12 h of fasting and was not altered with exercise. Thus, exercising at the beginning of a fast may improve the metabolic outcomes of fasting.

Beginning Your Fast With Aerobic Exercise
[5:40] Inspiration behind this study.
[7:56] Are blood ketone levels the best way to test for ketones?
- It is probably the easiest measurement, but it is not a perfect measure.
[12:53] Study design.
- 36 hr fasts with blood tests every 12 hours.
- The group that preceded a fast with cardio had a meal before the cardio.
[17:00] Results.
- After around 13 hours, the exercise groups ketones increased at a higher rate than the non exercise group.
[25:30] Was there a specialized protocol for breaking the fast?
[27:20] Were there any sleep disturbances in the subjects?
[35:30] Is there a beneficial ketone level for general health?
[40:55] What went wrong when carl was doing OMAD?
[46:00] Study takeaway.
[56:40] Was fat oxidation measured during the study?
