SHR # 2448 :: Metformin’s False Status as a Wonder-drug for Longevity and Physique Goals PLUS MORE

Share

Jared Boynton & Taeian Clark

Metformin is promised to make already healthy people to live longer, leaner and healthier. The drug has been studied in humans since 1950, but its popularity as an anti-aging drug is very recent. And its not truly supported by the literature. All of its purported anti-aging effects in otherwise healthy people is all basically extrapolated. There are no long term studies that prove otherwise healthy people who took the drug lived longer than the control that didn't. People who believe its value fro anti-aging will fight you if you disagree with them! Show Notes:

[8:00] Insulin mimetics for getting shredded?

  • Most people use when bulking or to offset the glycemic effects from GH use.
  • There is a duality to the use of GDA’s. They can have their uses in the proper context, however, improper timing or use can lead to unfavorable gut alterations, lower MToR activation, and negative effects in soft tissue.

[12:14] Metformin slows down replication of cancerous cells, but it can also lead to greater rates of cancer from activation of an alternative MToR sub-pathway.

[14:00] MToR and cancer is addressed.

  • Methionine:glycine ratio has to be taken into account.

[17:30] There are natural alternatives to metformin.

  • Berberine
  • Banaba leaf
  • Chromium
  • Cinnamon
  • Bittermelon extract

[18:38] why hasn’t the bodybuilding community embraced intermittent fasting?

  • The body has no storage system for protein to be used at a later time.
  • Pig study: eating protein sooner than every 3 hours blunted amino acid uptake from the next meal.
  • The maximum anabolic: catabolic response occurs by pulsing protein every 3 hours.

[28:01] Limiting animal protein to lower MToR and IGF-1.

  • Ampk/ MToR/ HBP activation is a balancing act.
  • Overactivating any of these at the wrong time could be detrimental to health.
  • The balance of amino acids should be the focus.
  • Supplementing with bcaa everyday could throw off amino balance.
  • A common side effect of this is inhibition of tryptophan uptake in the brain.
  • MToR is a main driver of muscle mass, and muscle is the integral component in staving off disease.
  • Veganism is correlated with the highest rates of mental disorder out of any popular diet.

[35:45] Metformin can elevate homocysteine levels.

  • Can deplete B-12.
  • It can also lead to lack of bloodflow, which is counter intuitive in diabetics.
  • Vegan diets are always compared to the standard American diet and not to a true meat only diet.

[43:28] The detriments of eating in the middle of the night.

[49:32] Benefits of metformin for athletes?

  • There are not many.
  • It blocks glucose uptake and lowers blood glucose.
  • Glutamine improves muscle insulin sensitivity and decreases fat cell insulin sensitivity.

[53:15] Bereberine vs. Metformin.

[55:13] Cycling days on and off of metformin?

  • Glycine is a better alternative because ti allows the “negative” impact of MToR to be mitigated.

[59:16] Vitamin D.

  • Vitamin A and vitamin D compete with each other.

[1:10:37] Pre-diabetic use of metformin?

  • Try other alternatives first such as chromium and focusing on cleaning up the diet.
  • Bad sleep wrecks insulin sensitivity.

[1:15:42] Orlistat

[1:19:00] Metformin may not be strong enough to inhibit MToR activation from 300g of protein per day.

[1:31:05] Your sexual prime buffers detrimental dietary choices, but that effect only goes so far…

  • Teens can build muscle on junk food and no sleep, but there are still obese teens.

[1:32:49] The microbial effects of metformin.

[1:37:07] Probiotic supplements do not colonize in the gut for the long-term.
