Health-Promoting Phytonutrients Are Higher in Grass-Fed Meat and Milk

pythochemical-richness-of-meat-and-milk

Stephan van Vliet, Frederick D. Provenza and Scott L. Kronberg While commission reports and nutritional guidelines raise concerns about the effects of consuming red meat on human health, the impacts of how livestock are raised and finished on consumer health are generally ignored. Meat and milk, irrespective of rearing practices, provide many essential nutrients including bioavailable protein, zinc, iron, selenium, calcium, and/or B12. Emerging data indicate that when livestock are eating a diverse array of plants on pasture, additional health-promoting phytonutrients—terpenoids, phenols, carotenoids, and anti-oxidants—become concentrated in their meat and milk. Several phytochemicals found in grass-fed meat and milk are in quantities comparable to those found in plant foods known to have anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, and cardioprotective effects. As meat and milk are often not considered as sources of phytochemicals, their presence has remained largely underappreciated in discussions of nutritional differences between feedlot-fed (grain-fed) and pasture-finished (grass-fed) meat and dairy, which have predominantly centered around...

Epigenetics… The ultimate question?

blog4-100

Is there evidence that there is an epigenome that is completely tabula rasa in its original state, somewhere in our body that is being used when the blueprint is needed? Erin Sharoni of Juvicell sites a study out of the Sinclair lab at Harvard they were able to reverse the epigenetic information damage in optic nerve cells in a mouse.  “Eyes are very susceptible to aging and very hard to work with. They sought to approach the problem and reverse the damage by reprogramming or resetting the epigenome. How can you go back on this timeline far enough to be healthy and clean, but not so far that you're back to square one. They ended up applying three of the Yamanaka factors instead of four. They eliminated c-Myc which is associated with cancerous cell proliferation and they were able to restore some amount of vision in these mice and in doing...

The Sun: What you don’t see can save your life

35BC3A83-E92B-4B31-B715-0328976B9CA6 Sun Spectrum

The sun has been a driving force in human evolution. Sun exposure has had a profound effect on the human condition all the way down to a genetic level. Today we’re told sun exposure is dangerous by the dermatological field. While I’m not going to get into skin cancer which I’ve talked about on my show numerous times, let it be known that skin cancer is caused by your diet and the sun is an unwilling participant. Visible light makes up a very small segment of all of the electromagnetic radiation that rains down upon us from the sun. Our fascination with visible light is predictable because we can see it. But the wavelengths that we cannot see may have greater effect on our physiology and health than we realize.  In 2002 my father was diagnosed with diabetic neuropathy. Today we realize that it’s not really from diabetes but from a...

LL37 Reconstituting, Dosing & Autism Update

Peptide LL37

Reconstituting and dosing LL37 for Autoimmune Disorders & Gut Rehabilitation. Take one 5 milligram vial (5,000 mg) of LL37 add 4 milliliters of bacteriostatic water to this. This will fill up the vial all the way to the stopper (video below is for BPc157 but can be used to illustrate the reconstitution process for LL37 however the dosing is different).  Allow it to sit overnight in the refrigerator and the next morning begin dosing at 10 units per injection. This will be 125 micrograms of LL37 which will last you 50 doses or 50 days. Then cease use for two to four weeks before starting a second round. Use until you notice no more benefits. LL37 and Autism Update I discussed my thoughts on how LL37 may benefit children on the spectrum in this show here SHR # 2289 - Is This The Miracle Stomach Cure We've All Been Waiting For?...

Study shows benefits of sex for older adults

31178903_s

COMMENTARY: I talk a lot about the importance of sex in health and longevity. Here’s another reason to be having more sex. Men feel they’re happier with the quality of their lives when they’re having more sex. If you’re making your man beg for it, you’re creating a grumpy man.  If you want your man to do more around the house, have more sex with him. Men are easy. The way to a man’s heart isn’t through his stomach… it’s just a little lower. The study says so! The sexual activity gives both sexes a boost, but intercourse is more important for older men. ANGLIA RUSKIN UNIVERSITY A new study published in the journal Sexual Medicine indicates that sexual activity is associated with improved wellbeing amongst older adults, measured through higher enjoyment of life scores. Led by Dr. Lee Smith from Anglia Ruskin University and Dr. Sarah Jackson from UCL, the study involved...

Does Breast Milk Tell Us Low Carb is Better?

breastfeeding-pharaoh breastfeeding pharaoh

There’s lots of debate about the appropriate human diet from a macronutrient basis. Low Carb High Fat – Low Fat High Carb – High Fat High Protein. Much of what we know about our diet through evolution has been skewed by the sheer availability of these foods in our environment. Human breast milk may be a better indicator of what macros the body places importance upon. Especially since these macros shift at different phases of lactation. Protein ratios shift between whey and casein. The amount and type of fats shift. And the carbohydrate concentration shifts over time as well. While breast feeding in and up to the first 12 months has been highly studied, research of continuing to breastfeed past 24 months and up to 48 months had been lacking. A group of scientist set out to discover how the macronutrient ratios shifted in mother’s milk when continuing to breastfeed up...

PETA Lies

peta-1-1

PETA has a campaign promoting the lie that consuming animal protein will hurt your sex life. I’m not going to manufacture words to make this more interesting. Its not only a lie but it’s the exact opposite of the facts. The vegan diet has long been associated with lowered libido and erectile dysfunction in men and amenorrhea in young menstruating women. This fact was exploited by Dr. John Harvey Kellogg who invented Kellogg’s Corn Flakes as a remedy to help young children avoid the self-polluting actions of masturbation. Dr. Kellogg knew full well that vegan diets and diets low in animal protein & fats reduced sexual desire, libido and ejaculation in young adults. There are also numerous scientific studies out there that show long-term vegan diets leading to lowered sex hormone production that can affect libido and fertility in otherwise healthy young adults in childbearing years. This one in particular is...

Super Human Radio Turns 13 Years Old

carl The Early Years
neal highfill

The third Saturday in November 2005 was the maiden broadcast of the Super Human Radio show on WKJK 1080AM in Louisville Kentucky. I was nervous as hell. I planned the entire week for my first show. I had broadcast veteran LG Dupree (Neal Highfill) in the studio with me for support. Kevin O’Neal was in the control room producing my show and Dr. Mauro Di Pasquale was my very first guest. The topic was the role of a high fat ketogenic diet in strength and performance. That was 13 years ago. Wow, looking back time has just flown by. After the show LG told me I was the most prepared host he’s ever seen. I had copious notes and questions. I was nervous as hell. The show has taken me places I could have never dreamed on that day in 2005. I never thought it would last this long. But I...

Malnourished? Whey beats soy even with less calories and protein

malnutrition

Despite a rapidly increasing world population and ever more hyper-connected, globalized world where people, technologies, and ideas move more fluidly than ever before, nearly 20 million children under five years of age are severely malnourished. Standard treatment of these individuals includes the use of calorie-dense ready-to-use therapeutic foods to ensure rapid weight gain. These foods have been so successful in their goal, that ready-to-use supplementary foods (RUSFs) have been developed for use in moderately malnourished children as well. For safety, shelf-life, and financial reasons, RUSFs are based upon a vitamin and mineral fortified peanut butter paste combined with soy protein. However, preliminary evidence in severely malnourished children suggests that a whey-based RUSF is more effective than one using soy. Yet evidence for the use of whey protein in moderately malnourished children is conflicting, with one of the largest barriers to inclusion being the additional cost. As such, Stobaugh et al conducted...

The 3 S's Of Evolution and Why You Should Do Them Daily

3s-of-evolution

When we pay attention to our evolutionary edicts we are rewarded with greater life span and heath span. 3 that have shaped our 1.8-million-year journey are what I like to call the 3 S's. Sun, Sex and Sleep. Sun exposure has endowed us with many health and longevity benefits that we are just now truly starting to discover. And it's much more than just Vitamin D production. Activation of the melanocortin system reduces whole body inflammation, shift the body to being more lean and muscular, improves mood, increases libido, makes arteries re-absorb atherosclerotic plaque and stops the accumulation of arterial plaque, and improves sleep. The act of having sex is our primary evolutionary directive. Long before Maslow's Hierarchy of Need, there were drivers of reproduction that made us do the things we did. These are not affected by cultural or social constructs, but instead woven right into our DNA. The continuation...
