The summer is upon us and citrus fruits abound. A favorite of this season is grapefruit. But should we approach grapefruit more as a drug than a fruit? If you're on HRT or at the age where hormone levels are starting to destabilize, or trying to get pregnant, you'll want to tune in today.

[3:25] Phytoestrogens in soy act as anti-nutrients.
- They were developed by the soy plant as a defensive mechanism.

- Naringen and campherol cause the cytochrome p450 enzymes to stop functioning.
- This can cause the half-life of compounds to be extended in the body; this is similar to how black pepper extract works.
[10:27] We have to forget the idea that grapefruit is inherently good just because it is a fruit.
- It jacks the liver up.
- Affects fat excretion through the liver.
- Those with menopause or andropause should be especially wary.
- Grapefruit has been shown to cause bioaccumulation of endogenous estrone as well as several exogenous hormones.
- This has actually caused Carl to wake up with hot flashes in the middle of the night.
- Naringen will infiltrate the liver and stay active for days.
[17:30] There was actually a supplement that used DHEA and naringen to convert into masteron in the liver.
- It was sold as a hardening agent.
- DHT converted into DHT in the liver.
- It took a week to take effect because of the time that it took naringen to “set up shop” in the liver.
[23:48] Cytochrome p 450 3-4A is inhibited via grapefruit and grapefruit juice.
- Grapefruit and its juice have also been shown to destroy thyroid hormone transport into the cell.
- Grapefruit also slows down caffeine metabolism.
- Could there be an addictive property of the fruit?
[33:50] The hematocrit and erythrocyte lowering effect of grapefruit.
- Eat grapefruit with the same caution that you would arsenic.
[37:50] Other citrus fruits contain smaller amounts of the same compounds found in grapefruit.
