SHR # 2467 :: BFR Update: Real World Results from Listeners

Show Notes:

[9:27] How did the guys first hear about BFR, and why did they take the leap?

  • They wanted to be able to train hard without reinjuring themselves.
  • Carl was able to raise his pro-BNP with his training intensity. He is now using BFR to get to failure at lower intensities.

[12:35] Gerard’s experience with BFR.

  • He tried the 10-15 dollar bands on Amazon and got nothing from them.
  • He feels that BStrong bands are worth the investment.

[15:20] The origins of Kaatsu training.

  • It was designed to assist in rehabbing an injury.
  • A blood pressure cuff was originally used.
  • Growth factors, strength, and muscle size all went up in the original study.
  • training/superhuman

[17;50] Training heavy with BStrong?

  • It is definitely a viable option.
  • It could be the happy medium between strength and muscle size gains.
  • A lot of unilateral movements don’t even require weights (think pistol squats).

[20:23] passing out from BFR?

  • Carl suggests not squatting with BFR.
  • He can go just as heavily as he would normally on machine based movements.

[19:58] Walking with BFR bands.

  • Simple cardio can give you a pump.
  • Putting a layer of cloth over the top of the bands can help prevent them from rubbing together.

[27:57] the hormonal response of increased demand on the legs from BFR.

[38:20] The buildup of lactate in the muscle facilitates the release of growth factors.

  • The mechanical congestion from BFR causes this buildup.

[48:00] strength gains from using BFR exclusively for arm work.

[49:10] Hesitations to using BFR.

  • Carl was wary of looking like “that guy” in the gym.

[55:37] how long does the pump stick around after removing the bands?

  • ~30minutes to 2 hours.
  • Carl keeps his bands on after training, but they are not at complete occlusion.

[1;07:34] What is the general consensus?

  • Rigo loves them.
  • Gerard also feels that the BStrong bands are worth the investment?
  • Another benefit is use whenever traveling.
  • Training sessions can be condensed.

[1:11:27] how could the company improve the product?

  • More consistent wrapping on the Velcro.
  • Tutorial video for applying the bands.

[1:23:28] Results from using the system.

  • Gerard: visual changes in definition.
  • Rigo: added ~ ¼ inch to his thighs.
  • Carl saw changes in his upper arms.
  • There seems to be an endothelial size benefit exclusive to BFR, regardless of muscle gain.
