SHR # 2629 :: Choosing To Be Strong + Glucosamine May Reduce Overall Death Rates as Effectively as Regular Exercise

Share

Coach Wade Johnson - Dr. Dana King, MD

Many people straddle training styles. But there is a very big difference between training styles and outcomes for powerlifters and bodybuilders. If your goal is pure strength you have to have the courage to choose and stick with it. Let your gains in pure strength be your goals and except that you may not look like a bodybuilder. PLUS Glucosamine supplements may reduce overall mortality about as well as regular exercise does, according to a new epidemiological study from West Virginia University. "Does this mean that if you get off work at five o'clock one day, you should just skip the gym, take a glucosamine pill and go home instead?" said Dana King, professor and chair of the Department of Family Medicine, who led the study. "That's not what we suggest. Keep exercising, but the thought that taking a pill would also be beneficial is intriguing."

Show Notes:

[13:43] Choosing between bodybuilding or powerlifting.

  • When strength is the primary goal, you have to accept whatever physique goes along with that.
  • If you want to do something great, the price is generally great.

[33:26] Wade’s unique training protocol- the reactive wave.

  • It involves a reactive and intuitive deload rather than a “set in stone”, scheduled deload.
  • This is individual in nature.
  • There is no % based It is based solely on performance.

[42:40] How does Wade split up the big 3 lifts?

  • Typically he has 2 upper and 2 lower days.
  • 1 bench and close grip decline days
  • 1 squat day and one deadlift day.

[50:45] Wade’s take on nutrition.

  • Overeating is often part of the strength game.
  • A lot of people overeat, but they underfeed.
  • Having the fuel to train is the first priority.
  • Focusing on nutition is next.

[53:40] The importance of sleep.

  • There will be an occasional short night of sleep, but the majority of nights should be a solid 7-8 hours of sleep.
  • Wade turns off his phone at 8 p.m.

[1:04:40] What was studying glucosamine’s effect on lifespan important?

[1:06:12] This study merged existing data with a mortality database to show a correlation.

  • Age, race, smoking, and soicio-economic factors were controlled for.

[1:08:40] Results.

  • People taking glucosamine for at least a year were only ½ as likely to die as those who weren’t.
  • An average of 635 mg/day.

[1:3:15] Is there an effect from the chondroitin as well?

  • It cannot be determined by this study, but it is a low risk vs. reward.

[1:14:50] Does glucosamine affect blood sugar or cholesterol?

  • Not that we are aware of.
  • It seems to lower inflammation.

[1:8:20] Is glucosamine getting credit for sulfate?

[1:23:00] What would be the next step in this research?
