Does Muscle Soreness Equate to a Productive Workout?
with Guest Brad Schoenfeld, MSc, CSCS, CSPS

Brad Schoenfeld discusses his most recent research paper authored with Brett Contreras looking at the role of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness as an indication of a productive workout. The discussion is quite important as so many people want to know the answer to this age-old question.

DELAYED ONSET MUSCLE SORENESS (DOMS) IS A COMMON SIDE EFFECT OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY, PARTICULARLY OF A VIGOROUS NATURE. MANY EXERCISERS WHO REGULARLY PERFORM RESISTANCE TRAINING CONSIDER DOMS TO BE ONE OF THE BEST INDICATORS OF TRAINING EFFECTIVENESS, WITH SOME RELYING UPON THIS SOURCE AS A PRIMARY GAUGE. IN TODAY'S SHOW WE DISCUSS THE RELEVANCE OF USING DOMS TO ASSESS WORKOUT QUALITY.

Show Notes:

Does Muscle Soreness Equate to a Productive Work out?

[00:01:50]   Brad explains how they compiled the findings through a meta-analysis.

[00:02:20]   Brad expounds on delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS) and exercise induced muscle damage (EIMD)

[00:05:04]   He follows up with a description on what the soreness is due to and the factors contributing to it.

[00:06:30]   The discussion interestingly turns to if muscle damage actually returns a hypertrophic response.

[00:12:05]   Carl shares his theory on specifically timed periods off (when your body adapts to your training regime), to induce DOMS and the benefits that occur. Brad eloquently weighs in on this theory.

[00:14:00]   Carl and Brad discuss the phenomenon of CrossFit and other training individuals developing rhabdomyolysis (rhabdo) and why it happens – tune in!

[00:19:36]   Does delayed onset muscle soreness and the exercise induced muscle damage have any linkage to the lactate buildup? Bard responds.

[00:18:55]   Brad replies to a question Carl’s on if metabolic buildup is an indicator and has an influence on the adaptation process of muscle.

[00:26:22]   Carl states that strength could be an adaptation of neuromuscular efficiency while hypertrophy is an adaptation of structural muscle change. Brad responds.

[00:27:55]   This leads to a conversation on what each individuals goals and endpoints are and how that relates to the topic. The principle of specificity would apply, but there is a continuum, and this is often missed.

[00:29:38]   Brad responds to a question on whether muscle flexing could accumulate those metabolic waste products that you would experience during a pump movement, and would it have any effect on muscle structure?

[00:32:25]   The discussion segues to mind muscle connection.

[00:34:15]   Brad conveys his opinion on:

  • the assessing of overtraining,
  • grips strength as an indicator and
  • the keyboard tap test

[00:36:50]   The show concludes with a summary on the results of the study.
