Men and women are not the same: sex differences in Mediterranean diet satiety

Men and women are not the same: sex differences in Mediterranean diet satiety
Daily nutritional composition of the experimental Mediterranean Diet.
Subjective appetite between men and women before and after eating Mediterranean diet meals

From a nutritional perspective, it is widely recognized that consuming a satiating diet can help prevent an overconsumption of calories through controlling appetite without deprivation. Interestingly, previous research has suggested that women are more sensitive to overfeeding and high-protein diets than men, which raises questions about sex-differences in appetite responses. To answer these questions, Bédard et al recruited 70 middle-aged, overweight-obese men and women to undergo a 4-week fully controlled feeding intervention using a traditional Mediterranean diet (MedDiet). An example of the daily nutritional composition of a 2500 kcal diet is presented in the image to the right, but everything was scaled to accommodate differences in energy intake among individuals so as to maintain weight. Before the intervention began, each participant was counselled on following the recommendations of the Canada’s Food Guide during a 4-week run-in period that led to similar dietary habits between men and women in the month prior...

Meta-Analysis of 59 trials shows no detrimental effects of fructose on blood lipids

Meta-Analysis of 59 trials shows no detrimental effects of fructose on blood lipids

In response to the global rise of diet-induced chronic disease, various health organizations have set upper limits for the consumption of added sugars based in part on research showing dose-dependent effects of added sugar consumption on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk markers. However, because most added sugars contain fructose, and because Robert Lustig compared fructose to alcohol, there has been an increasing concern towards this sugar specifically as the cause of many chronic diseases. The question remains, however, whether these concerns are warranted. In the most recent systematic review and meta-analysis on the issue, Chiavaroli et al pooled the results all controlled clinical trials to date that were greater than one week in duration and were performed in humans of all health backgrounds with a parallel or crossover design to assess the effect of fructose on blood lipids. Ultimately, 59 trials with 1,068 participants were included for analysis. Calorie for calorie Fructose...

Super Human Roundup: eggcellent inflammation, antioxidants, and heart attacks

Super Human Roundup: eggcellent inflammation, antioxidants, and heart attacks

Eggs and inflammation Inflammation is a normal and beneficial physiological response to bodily insult. However, failure of the body to appropriately execute and resolve acute inflammatory responses can lead to a detrimental chronic inflammatory state. This has been linked to numerous metabolic diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, and type-2 diabetes. Not surprisingly, inflammation is thus a prime target for nutritional interventions. In a recent review, Catherine Andersen from Fairfield University discussed egg components known to modulate inflammatory pathways. Eggs contain a variety of essential nutrients and bioactive compounds that can impact human health. For instance, one large egg contains about 1.3 grams of highly bioavailable (>90%) phospholipids (mainly phosphatidylcholine) that have been shown through tracer studies to be preferentially incorporated into high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and ultimately result in increased HDL-cholesterol concentrations. Experimental evidence suggests that egg-derived phospholipids have pro- and anti-inflammatory properties via both direct and indirect mechanisms. In a...

Low-carb diet beats low-fat for heart health, but can we trust the results?

Low-carb diet beats low-fat for heart health, but can we trust the results?

Last year, a study was published that investigated the efficiency of a low-carbohydrate diet to reduce body weight and common cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in free-living obese adults. A total of 148 adults (22-75 years; 88% women; 51% African American) underwent a 12-month randomized, parallel-group intervention following either a low-carbohydrate (LC) or a low-fat (LF) diet with no specific calorie or energy goal. Participants assigned to the low-carbohydrate diet were instructed to maintain an intake of digestible carbohydrate (total carbohydrate minus total fiber) of less than 40 g/d. Those assigned to the low-fat diet were instructed to maintain less than 30% of their daily energy intake from total fat (with <7% from saturated fat) and 55% from carbohydrate, based on National Cholesterol Education Program guidelines. Each participant met individually with a dietitian weekly for the first month, followed by small group counseling sessions every other week for the next 5...

HIIT for health in type-2 diabetes

HIIT for health in type-2 diabetes

As of 2014, the standard of care for the management of type-2 diabetes (T2D) includes at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (50–70% of maximum heart rate) in combination with resistance training at least twice per week. These recommendations are based on the well-established benefits of exercise, including improved blood glucose control, reduced cardiovascular risk factors, facilitation of weight loss, and improved well-being. More recently, the Italian Diabetes Exercise Study (IDES) demonstrated that exercise volume is a better predictor of health improvements than exercise intensity, at least when working within the recommended 50-70% maximum heart rate recommendation. This study also found greater reductions in visceral fat and parameters of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease with increasing cardiorespiratory fitness. However, increased volume means more time spent exercising, which can present as a huge barrier to partaking in any exercise. There has been a growing interest in the beneficial effects of high-intensity interval...

EPA & DHA bioavailability greater in phospholipids then triglycerides then ethyl esters

EPA & DHA bioavailability greater in phospholipids then triglycerides then ethyl esters

The health benefits of dietary EPA and DHA are vast, but not everyone consumes fish and other seafood that contains them. For these individuals, supplementation plays an important role doing exactly what it is supposed to do – supplement a dietary deficit. However, there is still much controversy over the most bioavailable form of EPA and DHA in supplements. This is because EPA and DHA can be packaged in different ways, such as bound to phospholipids (PL), bound to triglycerides (TG), or as ethyl esters (EE). Around 95% of dietary fat and most of the storage fat within the body are TG, with most the rest being PL. However, PLs are the primary component of cell membranes, so it is easy to see why some may argue that this form is superior for EPA and DHA supplementation. In contrast to these naturally occurring forms of delivery, EEs are synthetically created by...

From The Desk Of Randy Roach

From The Desk Of Randy Roach

I'm very excited to announce that Book 1 of Volume III is rapidly heading for publication! In order to give you a taste of what's coming, we are releasing the prologue along with a working draft of the front and back covers.   The prologue was actually many years in its evolution as it began its drafting back in 2008.  It has undergone many updates in order to accommodate the proliferation of the Muscle, Smoke & Mirrors project. The size of the prologue is equivalent to an average chapter size since it foreshadows many interesting and intertwining events that would transpire in the 1980s. I hope you enjoy the read and would appreciate your sharing the link with your friends. Grab the prologue by clicking here! Keep an eye out for more news of Book1 of Volume III coming soon. Randy.

More Damning News For Statin Drugs

If you're unfortunate enough to be prescribed and taking a statin drug you need to read this and then do some real soul searching. You have to have the courage to make a decision that your physician may not like. To find a safe way to get yourself off of statin drugs once and for all. The evidence of the dangers of statin drugs continues to mount. While the debate over the efficacy of statin drugs to reducing the rate of first and second heart attacks have come under fire in recent years, the mounting negative effects on other physiological systems continues to mount. Regular statin drugs used as prescribed is linked to dementia, muscle wasting, and muscle pain. Diabetes, cataracts, liver dysfunction, fatigue and now add advanced aging. In a recent study[1] published in the Journal of The American Physiological Society scientist discovered an unintended effect of statin drugs that...

Super Human Roundup: Weight gain through antipsychotics, dietary impacts on the microbiome, and the vitamin paradox in obesity

Super Human Roundup: Weight gain through antipsychotics, dietary impacts on the microbiome, and the vitamin paradox in obesity

Antipsychotics linked to extreme weight gain Second and third-generation antipsychotic medications (SGA) were originally approved by the FDA for the treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depression, but quickly soared in popularity among clinicians for off-label use in dementia, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive disorder, PTSD, and other conditions. Overall, they are among the biggest selling prescription drugs in the USA, with $14.6 billion in sales in 2009. This dramatic increase in SGA usage has led to greater scrutiny of their potential for adverse effects. Compared to first-generation antipsychotic medications, SGAs have a much lower risk of movement disorders, but major clinical trials of schizophrenia have linked SGA use with excessive weight gain and development of the metabolic syndrome. Less is known about the real-world effects of SGA use outside the context of these trials, spurring Arterburn et al to investigate the rate of extreme weight gain (EWG; >7% bodyweight) among all SGA...
