"Reports of My Death are Greatly Exaggerated" -or- Learning to Live by Embracing Death

twain-stone

It’s widely reported that Mark Twain knew and predicted the day of his own death throughout his life. He was born on November 30th, 1835 the day Hailey’s Comet circled the Earth. He died 75 years later upon its next coming on April 21st, 1910. How did this affect him? Knowing and believing that he knew the exact day of his death well in advance? His life was filled with achievement. He was an “American writer, humorist, entrepreneur, publisher, and lecturer. Among his novels are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1875) and its sequel, the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called "The Great American Novel". It's funny how one thought leads to a more obscure but interesting one. With my birthday coming up I thought to myself "it would make a cool bookend to a life if I died the same day I was born. Just many years...

I Want To Impress My Mortician

60-year-old-male-m

As I near my 60th birthday I take time to reflect over my life. It’s been a great life so far. Really. I don’t feel 60 and when I compare myself to others I know I don’t perform like a 60 year old man in the USA. Now that’s not to say I don’t have any challenges. Health-wise I’ve been chasing this neurological disorder that appears to be exactly what my sister had when she as misdiagnosed as having Parkinson’s Disease. The way I’ve chosen to handle it is vastly different. That brings me to an aspect of my life I want to focus upon in this blog. I was texting one day with Shannan Yorton Penna. I texted her that I wanted to impress my mortician. I said, “when I’m on that slab I want him/her to say ‘wow… this guy squeezed every bit out of this body that he...

Is Your Energy Drink Causing Mysterious Neurological Symptoms?

energy drinks

If you check the label of any “energy” product today you will find fairly high to overly excessive doses of vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine).  Companies like 5 Hour Energy and even the new Starbucks Energy drinks not only carry high caffeine but also a couple B vitamins always including B6. Most of these Energy product carry anywhere from 200% to 2000% of the RDA of B6. B6 is thought to contribute to energy production through three distinct pathways. It is required for protein metabolism, it helps to regulate the oxygen-carrying effects of hemoglobin and it helps to convert various nutrients into blood sugar thus playing a role in metabolic flexibility. In nature B6 doesn’t occur alone but along with 7 other B vitamins that are called the B Complex. B6 is found in a wide variety of foods including vegetable, meats, fish, nuts and fruits. And while its ubiquitous in our food...

We Just Got More New Evidence That Parkinson's Starts in The Gut - Not The Brain

We Just Got More New Evidence That Parkinson's Starts in The Gut - Not The Brain

I lost my sister Valerie to PD several years ago. I still maintain that she was misdiagnosed and thus mistreated. I do acknowledge that she had a neuro-muscular disorder, but being treated with dopamine agonists burned out her brain. She did not have any tremor at the onset of the disease. Only symptoms she had was weakness in her right leg and depression. Yet she was diagnosed with PD and drugs to treat PD were prescribed. Over the next 4 years she developed tremor as a result of the drugs. Self-fulfilling diagnosis. This study links changes in the gut and links it to the vegus nerve. The vegus nerve is the main wiring harness of the human body. It connects and innervates every organ system. It also runs along the outer wall of the stomach. It effects digestion directly. It’s also susceptible to the contents of the gut that may leak...

Aren't You Glad This Isn't Your Foot?

large foot

I’ve had a hard time getting back into leg training. Since August I’ve trained legs an average of twice a month. It’s not from fear of tearing anything or complications from previous injuries. It’s my left foot which I suffered a crush injury in April of 2016 which has gotten progressively worse over time. The crush injury caused the nerves in my foot to become aggravated which put in motion muscle imbalances that pulled two middle toes out of their sockets and caused the metatarsal of the big toe to spread away from the foot causing the first joint of the big toe to separate. As the foot has gotten worse over the past year the pain of walking has increased. But I never let that stop me from training legs as heavy as I always have in the past. But that all changed after doing heavy farmer walks one day....

Glycine: Short and Sweet

Glycine: Short and Sweet

One of the amazing gut-heathy benefits of bone broth is bestowed by the content of glycine. Bone broth contains around 20% glycine by weight. Awareness about getting more glycine in the diet is becoming a growing trend. Many people feel angst about using artificial sweeteners to replace sugar in their diet confused about their safety. Even the natural non-nutritive sweetener Stevia has been called into question recently. Glycine is also a very sweet amino acid. So much so that I used it in the sweetener blend in Thrīv Protein. Glycine is a great sweetener. It also counts as non-nutritive since it contains zero carbohydrates, sugars, fats or protein. And it’s an important amino acid to get more of in your diet. As a sweetener it’s very comparable to table sugar in taste, not s sweet, but similar. It also measures similar to toable sugar. 1 teaspoon in a cup of coffee...

Nautilus Pull-over My Way

Nautilus Pull-over My Way

On yesterday's BPPH I mentioned to Rob Regish that I had a preferred way to use the Nautilus pull-over machine. He asked me to video it and we can discuss it on the next BPPH. So here it is.I don't hold on to the hand rails. I focus the pulling on my lats and I allow my hands to separate at the bottom of the movement so I can push my elbows far back to activate the center of my back between my scapulas. Give it a try. You may find you're a little weaker when your arms aren't doing some of the work so lighten up and focus on the form.  BTW I haven't trained my legs in a couple months choosing cardio instead while my multiple injuries heal. I was shocked as I looked at this video as to how much my legs have shrunken. I have started leg...

A New Variation on Keto-Coffee

Kegenix Keto-Coffee
Keto-Coffee Nutrion Facts

Dave Asprey and his Bulletproof coffee have officially gone mainstream. So many people are now adding butter and MCT oil or MCT powder to their morning coffee and singing the mind-clarifying benefits. I discovered a new twist on Keto-Coffee today that I had to share. Kegenix has introduced their first Keto-Meal Replacement Powder for people on-the-go who want to grab a Keto-friendly convenient meal. While making my coffee this morning I wondered how it would taste in my coffee instead of my usual butter+MCT oil + stevia. All I have to say is I won't be making my morning coffee without it tomorrow. I ran out of MCT oil this morning and was looking for an alternative. I remembered that I had a jug of Kegenix Meal Replacement Vanilla in my pantry so I grabbed it. After reading the label I decided that it was fine to use prior to training...

Beef, possibly the only true superfood

the-only-super-food

To me a superfood is one that supplies you with every needed nutrient required to sustain life and not suffer a nutrient deficiency that shortens one’s life or causes debilitating physical condition. A superfood is one that as its name implies, of all foods, it is the highest in all the macronutrients and micronutrients required to actually thrive. A food source that if it were the ONLY food available to you, you would not suffer for, but instead rejoice in your good fortune for having such a food readily available. If you search the internet for superfoods you’ll find a virtual cornucopia of foods whose authors’ claim as superfoods. Most are fruits, veggies and grains. A few mention quietly dairy which in my humble opinion is in fact a superfood. But most stay clear of dairy because as of late dairy has become a “bad actor” in the “what’s healthy now”...
